With Third-Party Service Providers:
We use the following services to operate Sober Motivation. Each receives only the data necessary for its function:
- Brevo (email delivery): Your email address and name are shared with Brevo to send transactional emails such as welcome messages, password resets, and journal digest summaries.
- Jitsi by 8x8 (video meetings): When you join a video meeting, your name, user ID, and avatar are shared with 8x8's Jitsi service to connect you to the meeting room.
- Klipy (GIF search): When you search for GIFs in the app, your search queries are sent to Klipy's API.
- Neon (database hosting): All user data is stored on Neon's PostgreSQL cloud infrastructure.
- Google Cloud Storage: Profile photos and uploaded images are stored on Google Cloud Storage.
- Google Fonts: We load fonts from Google Fonts, which may receive your IP address and browser information when the app loads.
- Web Push (notifications): If you enable push notifications, your browser's push endpoint is used to deliver notifications.
- Google Gemini (journal insights): If your plan includes AI Insights and you have written at least 14 journal entries, your ten most recent entries are sent to Google's Gemini API to write your insights summary. Each entry is sent as its mood label plus up to the first 300 characters of its text. See section 4.
- RevenueCat (subscriptions): Your user ID, email address, and purchase history are shared with RevenueCat to run your subscription and to restore purchases.
- AppsFlyer (install measurement): In the iOS and Android apps only, and only if you allow tracking when we ask, your device advertising identifier and app events are shared with AppsFlyer so we can tell which advertisements bring people to Sober Motivation.
- Meta (advertising measurement): When you sign up and when you buy a subscription, a one-way hashed form of your email address, your user ID, and your IP address are sent to Meta to measure how our advertising performs. If you declined tracking when we asked, we do not send this.
- Sentry (error monitoring): When something breaks, technical diagnostic details including your user ID are sent to Sentry so we can find and fix it.
We never sell your personal information.
4. Your Journal & AI Analysis
Your journal entries are private. Only you can see your journal content. We never show your journal to other members or to coaches.
AI Insights is the one feature that sends journal content anywhere. If your plan includes it and you have written at least 14 entries, we ask Google's Gemini API to write you a short reflective summary. To do that we send your ten most recent entries, each as its mood label plus up to the first 300 characters of its text. We send no name, no email address, and no account identifier with it. Google returns the summary and does not use this content to train its models. If your plan does not include AI Insights, or you have fewer than 14 entries, none of your journal content leaves our servers.
We do not store sentiment scores or topic classifications for your entries. An earlier version of this policy described that, and of the AI running only on our own servers. Neither is accurate, and we have corrected it here.
5. Health-Related Data
Sober Motivation collects data related to your recovery journey, including your sobriety date, daily check-in status, mood check-ins, meeting attendance, journal entries, and Recovery Strength scores. We treat all of it as sensitive personal information.
We never sell it. We never send your sobriety data, journal entries, moods, check-ins, or meeting attendance to Meta, to AppsFlyer, or to any other advertising network. The advertising measurement described in section 3 covers two things only: that an account was created, and that a subscription was purchased.
We are not a healthcare provider and this app is not a medical device. Your data is not subject to HIPAA. However, we apply security practices consistent with protecting sensitive health-related information.
6. Data Security
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and at rest. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.
7. Data Retention & Deletion
We retain your information for as long as your account is active.
If you delete your account, we immediately and permanently delete your profile, journal entries, daily goals, activity logs, session data, and notification preferences. Community messages and feed posts you sent are anonymized (your name is removed and the content is replaced with "[This message was removed]") so that conversation threads remain readable for other members. Coaching session records are also anonymized.
We may retain anonymized or de-identified data that cannot be linked back to you for analytics that help us improve the app. This includes a de-identified record of your subscription history (plan tier, status changes, and timestamps) and product-usage events such as data exports. That record carries a one-way, non-reversible identifier and no name, email, or personal content. Data required by law may be retained as legally required.
8. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal information
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete your account and data (via Settings)
- Export your data (via Settings > "Download My Data")
- Opt out of marketing communications
You can exercise your data export and deletion rights directly in the app under Settings. For other requests, contact us at admin@sobermotivation.net.
9. Children's Privacy
Sober Motivation is not intended for individuals under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 18.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email or in-app notification.
