Five moves that work
- 1
Order the fanciest mocktail on the menu.
Bartenders like the challenge. Ask for something with fresh citrus, a herb garnish and a real glass, and you get a drink that looks like everyone else's and tastes better.
- 2
Hold a sparkling water with lime in hand.
A full glass answers the question before anyone asks it. Refill it before it empties and nobody offers you another.
- 3
Bring a dish you actually want to eat.
Arrive with food you are excited about. You have a reason to be at the table, something to talk about and a plate to focus on.
- 4
Text a friend "call me at 9" as your exit plan.
A call at nine gives you a clean reason to step outside, take a breath and decide whether to go back in or head home.
- 5
Set your own leave time and stick to it.
Pick the hour before you walk in, when you are clear-headed. Tell your ride, your partner or a friend so the plan is shared.
Drinks worth holding
Cranberry lime spritz
Cranberry juice over ice, a squeeze of lime, sparkling water on top and a rosemary sprig.
Ginger beer with mint
Cold ginger beer, a handful of mint and a lime wedge, served in your favorite glass.
Warm spiced cider
Apple cider simmered with a cinnamon stick and a few cloves, kept warm in a mug.
Virgin Mary
Tomato juice, lemon, hot sauce, pepper and a celery stalk. It looks like the real thing at brunch.
Citrus and berry sparkler
Sparkling water with orange slices and frozen berries, which double as ice.
Hot chocolate bar
Hot chocolate with a topping table of whipped cream, crushed peppermint and marshmallows.
Some people in recovery skip non-alcoholic beer and wine because the taste or the ritual pulls them back. Try a few and see how they land for you.
What to say when someone offers
- "I'm good, thanks. This is my favorite drink right now."
- "I'm driving tonight."
- "I'm taking a break from drinking."
- "Not tonight. Where did you find that cheese?"
You never owe an explanation. A friendly answer and a new topic settle it nearly every time.
If you are hosting
Put the non-alcoholic drinks up front where guests see them first. Offer at least two, label them, and use the same glasses for every drink so no one stands out. A hot chocolate bar or a cider pot gives guests something to do with their hands, and it makes the party easier for anyone skipping alcohol.
What you get for skipping the drinks
Keep skipping them and your body notices. These findings come from the Body Restoration tracker, each with its source.
-
7 Days
Deep sleep starts to normalize
Even while REM stays elevated, your deep (non-REM) sleep returns toward normal within about four days, the first restorative-sleep foothold.

3 Weeks
Your body clock resets
Around two weeks, the natural melatonin rhythm that makes you sleepy at night begins returning to its normal pattern.
-
1 Month
Facial redness and puffiness settle
Alcohol dilates facial blood vessels and drives puffiness, so being alcohol-free gives the flushing and under-eye swelling room to calm down.

Plan the whole season
The parties run from Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve, so write your plan once and reuse it. Put your leave time and your exit call in your phone for each event. Line up one alcohol-free thing to look forward to in the days after the biggest ones.
Questions people ask
What should I drink at a party if I am not drinking?
Pick something with as much care as a cocktail: a mocktail, sparkling water with lime, warm cider or ginger beer over ice. Holding a full glass you like keeps you comfortable.
How do I say no to a drink without a big conversation?
Use a short, friendly line and then ask a question about the other person. "I'm good, thanks" is a full answer.
What is a good exit plan for a holiday party?
Set your leave time before you arrive and tell a friend. Ask them to text or call at a set hour so you have an easy reason to step out and decide.
Can I host a party without alcohol?
Yes. Put the non-alcoholic drinks front and center, offer at least two, and add a hot chocolate bar or a cider pot as the centerpiece.
