Where the number comes from

Your weekly spend is the nights you drink times the amount you spend on one of them. The yearly figure is that weekly total times 52, and the monthly figure is the yearly total split into twelve.

The saved-so-far total spreads the week evenly, so each day without a drink adds one seventh of your weekly spend. That is the same math the Money Saved tracker in the Sober Motivation app uses, and its milestones step up at $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000 and on from there.

What to count in a night out

The drinks are the obvious part. A fuller total also has the tip on the tab, the bottles and six-packs from the store, the delivery fee and the late-night food that went with them, and the rideshare home. Add what a normal night really costs and the yearly figure gets more honest.

Give the total a job

A number feels real once it has a purpose. Pick something you would buy at that price, write it next to your total and check the total against it every week. The Money Saved tracker lets you set a treat goal and draws a progress ring toward it.

Questions people ask

How do I work out how much I spend on alcohol?

Look at one typical week. Count the nights you drink, then total what a normal night costs, including the tip, the food and the ride home. Multiply the nights by the nightly total.

Does the calculator include money I have already saved?

Yes. Enter the days since your last drink and the saved-so-far card shows the total to date, using one seventh of your weekly spend for each day.

Why does the yearly total use 52 weeks?

A year has 52 weeks, so your weekly spend times 52 gives the year. The monthly figure is that yearly total divided by 12.

What are the savings milestones?

The tracker celebrates $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000, and shows how far you are from the next one.
